Option 1: The steel cargo box
A cargo box drops into the dead space behind the rear seats and turns it into a defined, rattle-free compartment for recovery gear, tools, and trail kit. It's the lowest-effort, highest-return fix for most people.
Pros: Inexpensive relative to drawers, keeps your full cargo height, installs in well under an hour, and — if it's built from real steel — holds heavy gear without flexing. Cons: A steel box heavy enough to be useful can't ride on adhesive or velcro — it mounts with four screws through the factory panels. That's intentional, but if you won't drill, it isn't for you. It also won't give you a sleeping platform.
Cost: Roughly $150–$300 depending on one side or both.
Option 2: The drawer system
Drawers are the premium answer: slide-out storage, often with a flat top you can sleep or cook on. If the 4Runner is your basecamp, they're worth it.
Pros: Maximum organization, lockable storage, and a load floor for a sleeping platform or fridge slide.
Cons: Expensive ($400–$900+), heavy, and they eat 6–8 inches of vertical space — which means your taller gear no longer fits and rearward visibility can suffer. Installation is a project, not an afternoon.
Best for: Overlanders, truck campers, and anyone who genuinely uses the load-floor surface.
Option 3: MOLLE panels
MOLLE panels turn dead vertical surfaces — rear quarter windows, console sides — into a configurable grid for pouches, radios, recovery boards, and tools.
Pros: Cheap, light, and endlessly reconfigurable. Great for gear you grab and swap often, and they keep the floor clear.
Cons: They hold pouches and light items, not a heavy, contained load — a panel is not a box. Buy panels cut for your truck's specific cavities; universal sheets fight you on install.
Best for: Day-trip and trail setups where access speed beats enclosed volume.
How to actually choose
Stack them against how you use the truck:
- Daily driver + weekend trails: Cargo box. Done.
- Build-it-out overlander who sleeps in the truck: Drawers, with MOLLE on the walls.
- Minimalist who swaps gear constantly: MOLLE, maybe a box on one side.
These aren't mutually exclusive — plenty of owners run a cargo box and MOLLE panels. The mistake is buying drawers you don't need and losing the space, or buying a flimsy plastic insert that rattles itself apart.
